Program Notes
"Not a Yellow Leaf, November" is the third piece in my series of solo works inspired by natural phenomena. The title suggests a refusal of surface appearance: not the yellow leaf itself, but the condition in which change has already begun internally.
In November, Austin is still mostly green. One day, I noticed a single yellow leaf hidden among the surrounding foliage. It was barely visible, flickering in and out of sight. It felt like a faint signal of autumn—subtle, fragile, yet undeniably present.
As I kept watching, the leaf sometimes seemed separate from the green around it, and at other times blended back in. Though there was no wind, it still seemed to move. This gave me the sense that something was changing, even if nothing on the surface seemed to be happening.
Not a Yellow Leaf, November, for accordion solo, was written for Théo Ould.
