I enjoy capturing the scenery, because the photos can preserve the memory of that moment. From summer to fall, I enjoyed the thirty-minute walk to school, watching the wildflowers blooming to wilting, the leaves turning from green to yellow; listening to the crickets chirping in the grass and the flow of creek in the grove; feeling the wind passing by me and the squirrels running away from me...
I shared these captured images with an artist friend, who created three paintings to portray autumn, and gifted them to me. I imagined myself walking into the painted landscapes, recording this autumn with music.
Three Landscapes in Autumn is based on a folk song from the Yunnan province of China, Flowing Creek, called eastern serenade. As the title indicate, the piece is divided into three parts, all these parts have a unified pitch material, derived from this folk song. Starting from three pitches: E-D-B, then expanding with the change of rhythm, eventually hearing the melody of the folk song.
